I did this in 3 mins with my Belgian Shepherd, I said ‘good boy’ and a treat instead of clicker. It works great and now he does it without any treat, I just say ‘lie down bed’ – thanks so much AAAAA+++++

Most people fail not because of the training method but because of lack of consistency – ie. they “give up” and let the dog get away with it sometimes, because they get fed up with enforcing it…if you let the dog get away with it once, he’ll try even harder next time! You don’t have to be nasty about it but you do have to be firm, consistent and patient about repeating things lots of times in the beginning, until it becomes habit and the dog doesn’t think of challenging it anymore.

It really depends on the dog – different dogs learn different things at different paces. We actually taught Honey this command when she was a young pup so I can’t remember now how long it took but not long – maybe a couple of weeks? The key is being consistent about enforcing it even after they have learnt the command – ie. test them with different distractions, distances, etc, and if they get off, gently but firmly send them back to the bed – so that they understand they HAVE to obey.

You can still praise while you’re teaching it but just use your verbal marker first (eg. “Yes! Good girl…”). You might be able to teach this just with random praise words and treats but it’s much harder for the dog to figure out what he’s being rewarded for (looking up at you? Sitting? Touching the bed? Is it the lying down or the lying down on the bed that counts? etc, etc) – so takes longer and may not be as reliable. This method communicates in a way dogs understand.

Yes, you can do it with a consistent verbal marker signal (eg. “Yes!”) – ALWAYS said in the same tone, at the same time as the CLICK in the video – followed by treat. You will need to “switch on” your chosen word the same way as a clicker (see my Intro to Clicker Training – Part 1) first. Make sure you are consistent with the word you choose and always use that word to mark the correct behaviour – don’t use “good dog” or something that you might use in other situations.

can the dog still be trained to do this without a clicker and just treats?

    Thanks for a great video!!

Yeah, that’s her latest trick that she has learnt so she is very keen on offering it! She always does it with her new trick…before this, it was “Look up” which she was always offering, regardless of what I asked for! :-)

I love how honey always offers that head shake behavior when she’s not sure what you want…very cute…

Oh, I’m sure a gentle greyhound would never be a nuisance! :-) But yes, it is a very useful command to teach dogs and I think it’s only fair to respect the feelings of those people who may not like dogs as much as us or who may be scared of them…but this way, the dog can still enjoy being in the room with you.

This was really helpful Hsinyi thanks so much! I’ve got to learn this so I can train my greyhound to go to his bed, I’m sure my mom won’t want him racing about and being a nuisance when she has people over. Better to start training myself now (and my current dog, so she can show the new guy what to do!) so I can train him later on when I do get him.
